The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has reminded taxpayers that obtaining a Tax Identification Number (TIN) is free and available both online and offline.
According to the agency, every individual and business is expected to have a TIN to remain compliant with tax regulations in Nigeria.
The Options Available
FIRS explained that individuals may obtain their TIN through the Joint Tax Board portal, by visiting a nearby FIRS office, or by engaging accredited tax professionals. Businesses, on the other hand, must first register with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) before applying for a TIN.
Required documents include incorporation certificates, company particulars, and valid proof of business address.
Why It Matters
Analysts say compliance with tax regulations is vital for businesses hoping to access banking services, government contracts, or secure long-term financial stability.
Industry Insight: Flex, a business finance platform, notes that many Nigerian small and medium businesses lose opportunities simply because they delay getting a TIN. On its official blog, Flex provides detailed guides to help entrepreneurs stay compliant while focusing on growth.
Avoid Shortcuts
FIRS cautioned taxpayers to avoid paying third parties for “fast-track” processing of TIN applications, stressing that the service is free of charge.
